How to Tell if Your Website is Holding You Back (And What an SEO Consultant Would Say)
By Bryan Donbavand · May 29 · 4 min read
It’s a common scenario: you have a website you’re proud of, but it doesn’t seem to be bringing in new business. You get most of your work from word-of-mouth, and you’re starting to wonder if your site is doing its job.
An SEO consultant looks at a website differently. We’re not just looking at design; we’re looking for signals that tell search engines what your business does and why it’s the best choice for a potential customer. Here are the most common signs that your website is holding you back.
1. You’re Invisible for Anything Other Than Your Business Name
This is the clearest sign of a problem. If someone searches for your exact business name and you appear, that’s a start. But what about when a potential customer searches for the service you provide, like "landscaper in brighton" or "emergency plumber near me"? If you don’t show up for those searches, you’re missing out on nearly all of your potential audience. People who don’t know you exist can’t find you.
2. You Don’t Have Clear, Specific Pages for Your Services or Areas
A single "Services" page with a long list of what you do is not enough. Search engines need clear, dedicated pages to understand your offerings. Each service and each location you serve should have its own page.
- Service pages: Instead of one page listing everything, create separate pages like "Boiler Repair," "Boiler Installation," and "Annual Servicing."
- Location pages: If you serve multiple areas, create pages like "Plumber in Hove" and "Plumber in Worthing" to capture local searches.
3. The Page Titles Are Wasted
The page title (the text that appears in the browser tab) is one of the most important on-page SEO factors. Too often, they’re generic. A title like "Home" or "Services" tells a search engine nothing.
Instead of: "Our Services"
Use: "Expert Boiler Repair and Installation in Brighton | Your Company Name"
4. Your Website Is Slow or Clunky on Mobile
Over half of all web traffic is on mobile devices. If your site is difficult to navigate on a phone, if text is too small, buttons are hard to press, or it takes more than a few seconds to load, users will leave. Google knows this and prioritises mobile-friendly sites.
5. You’re Not Using Internal Links
Internal links are links from one page on your site to another. They help search engines understand the structure of your site and establish which pages are most important. For example, a blog post about "choosing a new boiler" should link to your "Boiler Installation" service page. It’s a simple but powerful way to build authority.
6. Your Site Looks Good but Says Nothing
A visually appealing site is great, but the content is what converts visitors into customers. Your text needs to answer three key questions quickly:
- What problem do you solve?
- How do you solve it?
- What should the visitor do next (e.g., "Call for a Quote," "Book a Consultation")?
If your content is vague or full of marketing jargon, it’s not working hard enough.
7. You’re Relying on Referrals, Not Organic Leads
If 100% of your business comes from referrals, it means your website isn't generating new leads on its own. While referrals are valuable, a healthy business has multiple lead sources. A well-optimised website acts as a 24/7 salesperson, bringing in qualified leads from people actively searching for your services.
In Summary
A website that isn’t optimised for search is like a shop with no sign on the door. It might look great inside, but no one knows what it’s for or how to find it.
- If your website only ranks for your brand name, you're invisible to new customers.
- If your website has vague service pages, search engines don't know what you do.
- If your website is slow on mobile, you're losing over half your audience.
- If your website isn't generating leads, it's a brochure, not a business tool.
Fixing these issues is the first step toward turning your website into a lead-generation machine that works for you around the clock.
